UGC video ads, built to the specs of the feed.
Why the unpolished format keeps beating the polished one, what each placement wants in frame and length, and how to produce a full set without booking anyone.

Why the format wins
Not because unpolished video is inherently better, but because of two things about how it gets bought.
A UGC video ad is an ad shaped like a post. One person, vertical, handheld, talking about a thing they use. The first reason it works is placement: it matches what is already on the screen, so it gets watched for a second or two before the viewer decides it is advertising. Polished creative announces itself in the first frame, and the first frame is the entire decision.
The second reason is arithmetic. A studio shoot produces one or two assets, so the ad you run is the ad you could afford. UGC production is cheap enough that you can make twenty and run the one that wins. Most of the performance difference people credit to the format is really the difference between picking from two options and picking from twenty.
Both reasons have limits worth saying out loud. The format does not fix a weak offer, and it does not survive being obviously fake. An ad that looks handheld but talks like a press release performs like a press release. And an audience that has seen the same generated face six times stops reading it as a person, which is why creative refresh matters more here than on a brand campaign.
What each placement wants
The specs move around, so treat this as a starting point and check the platform page before a large build.
| Placement | Frame and file | Length that works | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok in-feed | 9:16 at 1080 by 1920, MP4 or MOV, up to 500 MB. Square and landscape are accepted but take less of the screen. | Accepted from five to sixty seconds. Direct response creative normally lands between fifteen and thirty. | The icon rail on the right and the caption block at the bottom sit over the video, so on screen text belongs in the middle. |
| Instagram and Facebook Reels | 9:16 at 1080 by 1920, MP4 or MOV with H.264 video. The file size ceiling is generous at 4 GB. | Up to ninety seconds is allowed. The same fifteen to thirty second band does most of the work. | Interface overlays cover the top and bottom of the frame, so keep the hook text clear of both edges. |
| YouTube Shorts | 9:16 at 1080 by 1920, bought through Google Ads as a video action or demand generation campaign. | Up to sixty seconds. A shorter cut of the same script is worth uploading as its own asset. | The title and the action button sit along the bottom, so the closing card should not live down there. |
Taken from each platform's own published ad specs in August 2026, not from hands on tests. No row here is ours: these are the places the ads get bought, not tools we sell. Specs change without much warning, so check the current platform page before committing to a large build.

The part of the frame you can actually use
Every vertical placement covers the edges of the video with its own interface. Design for the middle and the same file works everywhere.
- Keep on screen text inside roughly the middle two thirds of the height. The top strip and the bottom strip belong to the platform, not to you.
- Leave the right hand edge clear on TikTok. The icon column runs down it, and text that slides under it is text nobody read.
- Burn captions in rather than relying on automatic ones. Automatic captions are positioned by the platform, and they get positioned over your close.
- Put the claim in the first frame as text as well as speech, because the first impression happens before audio starts on most devices.
- Do not fill the frame edge to edge with product. Vertical placements crop differently between apps, and a product that is centred survives all of them.
Structuring the test so the result means something
Producing five ads is easy now. Reading them correctly is the part that still takes discipline.
One variable per batch
Same offer, same body, same close, five opening lines. If the creator and the length move at the same time as the hook, the winning ad cannot tell you why it won.
Judge the first three seconds first
Look at how many people are still there at three seconds before you look at cost per result. A hook that loses the room early never got the chance to sell anything, and that is a writing fix rather than a targeting one.
Refresh before it dies
When frequency climbs and cost per result drifts up, the creative is tiring. Queue the next batch while the current one is still working, so there is never a week with nothing new to rotate in.

Producing the set without opening a production tool
Rendering the file is not the slow part of a launch. Filling the same form again for every placement, every hook and every client is.
- One script needs four exports for four placements. Asking for four aspect ratios in a sentence is faster than setting four of them by hand, and it does not skip one at eleven at night.
- The naming convention can be enforced by the thing producing the files, so the report stays readable without anyone renaming anything.
- A weekly refresh is a schedule, not a task. An n8n flow can run the next batch on a Monday and drop the URLs where the buyer will see them.
- The brief, the run and the output all being text means the whole test is reviewable later. You can see exactly what was asked for, which is more than most creative processes can say.
Wireflow is our own product and it is the one we recommend here, because its generation workflows are exposed on a hosted MCP endpoint that any agent can call. The specific ways to write the ads that come out of it are on AI UGC ads, and the honest view of what the footage looks like is on AI UGC videos.
Monday batch: take the winning hook from last week and give me 9:16 at twenty and fifteen seconds, plus 1:1 and 16:9 at twenty.
Same script and same creator across all four so the only change is frame and trim. The fifteen second cut drops the second body line rather than the close.
Four files named to the convention and written to the sheet. The 16:9 version has the captions sitting low, so that one needs a look before it goes live.
list_workflows, run_workflow and get_execution are the tool names on the server. Only run_workflow spends credits.
Where the rest of this lives
Three next questions, depending on whether you are writing them, casting them or running a lot of them.

- Casting and directing the person on camera: AI UGC creator.

Questions people ask about UGC video ads
What is a UGC video ad?
It is a paid video ad built to look like a post rather than a commercial. Vertical, handheld, one person talking to the camera, no brand sting on the front. The label describes the style, not who filmed it, which is why brands run UGC style ads made by agencies, by paid creators or by generation.
Why do UGC video ads outperform polished creative?
Two reasons that have nothing to do with the ad being good. The format matches what is already in the feed, so it gets watched before it gets identified as an ad. And it is cheap enough to test properly, so the winner you eventually run was picked from twenty candidates instead of being the only thing the budget allowed.
What length works for each placement?
TikTok in-feed ads accept five to sixty seconds, Reels ads run up to ninety, and Shorts ads up to sixty. The band that does the work on all three is roughly fifteen to thirty seconds. Cut a shorter version of the same script rather than trimming the close, because the close is the part that gets paid for.
What size should a UGC video ad be?
1080 by 1920 at 9:16 covers TikTok, Reels and Shorts, which is where most of the vertical spend goes. Export a 1:1 at 1080 by 1080 and a 16:9 at 1920 by 1080 from the same take if you are also buying feed and in stream placements. Keep captions inside the middle of the frame so platform UI does not cover them.
How many UGC video ads do I need to launch a test?
Five is a reasonable first batch: one offer, one body, five different opening lines. Fewer than that and a flat result tells you nothing about the offer. Many more than that and the budget is split too thin for any single ad to leave the learning phase.
Do I need real creators to make UGC video ads?
Not for testing. Generated performers cover the volume stage, where the point is to find which angle works rather than who says it. Book real creators for the ads that trade on a specific person, and disclose synthetic performers where the platform or the local advertising rules ask you to.
Produce the first set to spec
Connect the MCP endpoint, ask for one script in four frames, and check the files against the placement notes above. Listing the workflows costs nothing.
